“PATRIOTISM, VALOUR, FIDELITY, AND ABILITIES”: WASHINGTON signs a 1793 presidential military appointment

Uncommon partly printed DS as president, signed “Go: Washington,” one page on vellum, 16.5 x 20, March 19, 1793. A military appointment for John Wade as Lieutenant in the First Sub Legion in the service of the United States, granted with “special Trust and Confidence in [his] Patriotism, Valour, Fidelity, and Abilities.” Countersigned by Secretary of War Henry Knox. The document is engraved with various patriotic vignettes, including an eagle, flags, armaments, a Liberty cap, and more. Double matted and framed with a full-length portrait to an overall size of 33.5 x 27. In very good condition, with storage folds, light wrinkling and creasing, several small spots of loss, paper seal cracked and partially chipped, and some writing light but legible.
