Military officer (1827–1896) who served in the Civil War under Hancock. He later commanded the 7th Infantry and 2nd Cavalry, the western arm of Brigadier General Alfred H. Terry’s column in the Great Sioux War, and later wrote insightful reports about Little Bighorn. War-dated, partly printed DS, signed on the reverse “John Gibbon” as major general “in the field,” one page both sides, 17 x 14, February 24, 1865. An “Inventory and Inspection Report of Unserviceable Ordnance Stores” for Company D, 9th Regiment, Virginia Volunteers. A touch of mild soiling and handling wear, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
