Description

Military officer (1847–1919) who was second in command of Company F during the Washita Campaign. Later promoted to 1st lieutenant, Gibson was second in command of Company H during the Yellowstone and Black Hills Expeditions, and served in the same capacity, under Benteen, at the Battle of Little Bighorn. One of the few survivors, Gibson campaigned against the Nez Perce in the following year and ended his years as a civil servant in New York City. Partly printed DS, signed “F. M. Gibson” as 1st Lieutenant of the 7th Cavalry, one page, 10.75 x 8.5, May 25, 1878. A requisition for stationery supplies for a court martial at the Department of Dakota at St. Paul. A few tiny chips, holes, and edge separations at folds (archivally reinforced) and ink scribble (made when form was filled out) touching top edge of second signature, otherwise fine condition.
