Philip H. Sheridan was a Union general (1831–1888) whose cavalry command blocked Lee’s escape at Appomattox; Alfred H. Terry (1827–1890) was a Union general who fought at First Bull Run and Port Royale, and who, after the war, became commander of the expedition against the Sioux during which Custer met his end at Little Bighorn. Ink endorsement signatures, “Alfred H. Terry” and “P. H. Sheridan,” forwarding the same partial February/March 1876 document from Headquarters, Department of Dakota (St. Paul) and Headquarters, Military Division of the Missouri (Chicago) St. Paul and Chicago, respectively. The date coincides with the onset of the Great Sioux War, whose most infamous confrontation, the Battle of Little Bighorn, took place in the following June.
