Ink signature, “J. A. Garfield, Hiram, Portage Co., Ohio,” on a slightly irregular goldenrod 4 x 2 slip clipped from an envelope. An 1883 ANS on the reverse, signed by his wife, Lucretia R. Garfield, explains the item’s origin: “From an old envelope addressed to me by Gen. Garfield with Mrs. cut off his own signature remains.” Very faint vertical fold, postmark just touching last letter of Garfield’s name, and mild scattered soiling and wrinkling, otherwise fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
