Description

“We Republicans have been pointing out the weaknesses, waste and inefficiency of the ‘Great Society’”

Five TLSs signed “Jerry Ford” as congressman, each one page, 8 x 10.5, congressional letterhead, 1968–1972. Ford writes to Jerry Hrdlicka in Cicero, Illinois. A few excerpts follow. April 29, 1968: “I appreciated hearing from you and knowing of your concern with issues of interest to the Congress and all Americans….” June 28, 1968: “As you know, we Republicans have been pointing out the weaknesses, waste and inefficiency of the ‘Great Society’ for months and urging President Johnson to cut down on new and expensive projects in order to balance the budget and to present inflationary costs. However, he has not heeded our warnings….” July 23, 1968: “What we need is a change in the leadership of our government on every level. Fortunately, the American voters will have an opportunity to effect a change by electing a Republican President and by sending more Republicans to the Congress on November 5….” May 4, 1971: “Thanks you for your recent note … relative to the administration of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970…” October 3, 1972: “Thank you especially for your loyal and dedicated support of President Nixon and your amusing remarks about Senator McGovern and Sargent Shriver….” A few mailing folds touching signatures, and irregular ink flow to one signature resulting in dropped “err,” otherwise very fine, clean condition. R&R COA.
