Partly printed DS, signed “James K. Polk,” one page on vellum, 13.5 x 16.75, March 3, 1849. A military promotion for Daniel Ruggles as Brevet Lieutenant Colonel. Ruggles (1810-1897), who served in the Army during the Second Seminole War and the Mexican War, resigned his commission at the outbreak of the Civil War and became a Confederate general, leading a division at the Battle of Shiloh. Countersigned by W. L. Marcy as Secretary of War. Intersecting folds (away from signature), signature just a shade light (but fully and easily legible), and some wrinkling and subtle soiling, otherwise very good to fine, bright condition.
