LS, signed “Franklin Pierce,” one lightly lined page, 8 x 10, April 8, 1843. Pierce writes from Concord, New Hampshire to booksellers Banks, Gould & Co. in New York. In part: “Wishing to purchase an entire set of New York Reports, including Johnson's, Johnson's Chancery, Cowen's, Wendell's, and the later reporters (if there be one). I wish you to inform me on the receipt of this the lowest price for which you will deliver the entire series in Boston, cash on delivery, or on the receipt of the books by me here…. If you have a catalogue of the law books you publish and will send me one, marking the lowest cash prices on delivery in Boston, perhaps I may wish to make other selections. Should your prices be satisfactory I will probably order a set of New York Reports complete, and if so will instruct you to shoe care to forward them at Boston….” The reverse bears the integral address panel in Pierce's hand and bearing his franking signature, “Free, Frank. Pierce.” In very good condition, with letter tipped to larger sheet at left edge, intersecting folds (touching signature of letter; vertical fold to “P” of franking signature; edge separations expertly reinforced on reverse, one touching last name of signature to letter); light show-through of postmark behind “Fra” of letter signature; and “FREE” ink stamp lightly touching “k” and “P” of franking signature.
