Distinguished Czech composer (1841–1904) of much orchestral and chamber music. His Symphony No. 9, “From the New World,” takes a place among the most beloved and enduring works in the symphonic repertoire. Bust cabinet photo, 4.25 x 6.5, inscribed in ink on the reverse to Laura Sedgwick Collins, a student of Dvorák’s at the National Conservatory, and signed, “Antonin Dvorák, New York 18 [sic] 18/5 94.” The image, which has been reproduced in a number of sources (including the Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians), was originally taken in Spillville, Iowa in 1893. Accompanied by a copy of a 1947 Parke-Bernet catalogue entry for the same item. Trimming and tiny surface chips to bottom edge of mount, ink smudge to background of image, and subtle toning to the signed reverse, otherwise fine condition.
