Description

American painter, author and traveler who specialized in portraits of Native Americans in the Old West. ALS signed “Geo. Catlin,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 8, January 20, 1847. Lengthy letter to Putnam, his New York publisher concerning legal problems involving his London publisher Henry G. Bohn. In part, “It hurts me that the old man was arrested & imprisoned…I never yet sued a man, nor ever have been sued…. In the affair with Bohn…having acted toward him…fairly & honourably…putting a certain price upon their books…intending to look to me for their value rather than outlay anything.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds and light show-through from text on reverse.
