Canadian scholar, philosopher, and author (1911–1980) who takes a place among history’s most eloquent and influential thinkers on the subject of media. His coinages include the familiar phrases “the medium is the message” and “global village.” TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, Centre for Culture and Technology letterhead, November 15, 1977. McLuhan writes to James O’Roark in Santa Barbara. In part: “It is a strange coincidence that i should be reading Wyndham Lewis’ first novel as your letter arrived! His first novel is one hitherto unpublished, and it is called Mrs. Duke’s Million…. My own Lewis collection is fairly complete, but I don’t think that there are any duplicates in the collection…. I saw a great deal of Lewis during the 2nd war, but having followed his suggestion that I join him in Windsor Ontario at Assumption University, I had no sooner done so, that the war was over, and he went home. His plan had been that we begin to put out once more his journal The Enemy…. I can readily understand you enthusiasm about this man. Having studied him a great deal, I realize how much I own him. Some of my students have done doctoral dissertations on him, and at least one of these should have been published long ago….” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. In fine condition. R&R COA.
