American actor (1903–1960) who appeared in seven of the AFI’s list of the 100 Greatest American Movies: It Happened One Night, Bringing Up Baby, Gone with the Wind, The Grapes of Wrath, The Maltese Falcon, It’s a Wonderful Life, and The Searchers. In the mid-1950s he attained his greatest fame as star of TV’s Wagon Train.
