American author (1836–1902) best known for his colorful tales of California pioneers, including the much-anthologized story “The Outcasts of Poker Flat.” Cabinet photo, 4.25 x 6.5, picturing a dapper Harte in plus fours, vest, and jacket, a hat in one hand and a cane in the other, signed in fountain pen on the mount, “Bret Harte.” In very good condition, with scattered light adhesive traces (touching both image and signature; visible mainly from an angle), toning to mount (including area behind signature), and pinholes at corners.
