Description

The author of The Jungle Book balks at naming a boat

Nobel Prize–winning British author best known for such colorful classics as Just So Stories, Captains Courageous, and The Jungle Book. TLS, one page, 7.5 x 9, Burwash Etchingham letterhead, October 12, 1926. Private letter sent to a gentleman looking for help naming his boat. In part, “You gave a boat no name, and the Florida hurricane wrecked it and a few others. It seems to me, then, that you ought to stand well with the Fates in respect of your next craft. The first one being nameless, has been the sacrifice which ought to bring you good luck for the second…But as to what you will call your second boat, I’d rather not take the responsibility. I merely suggest that you do not call her after anyone alive, but choose some abstract or geographical name.” In fine condition, with a vertical mailing fold through first letter of signature. R&R COA.
