Description

Sinclair believes his essay “spread distrust of our capitalist press.”

Influential Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Jungle and other classics. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, May 11, 1925. Letter of advice to a gentleman, with Sinclair discussing his work entitled The Brass Check. In part, “As to ‘The Brass Check’: I had many purposes; some I accomplished, some not. I lost a great deal of money selling it below cost, and I had not intended to do that! I am quite sure, however, that I helped to spread distrust of our capitalist press. Your friends are not saying very much when they say that I would do something sensational or get arrested in order to get something into the newspaper, I make that statement myself in ‘The Brass Check’ and explain why. Of course, men who are satisfied with the capitalist system will not get into trouble with the capitalist press.” In very good condition, with moderate mailing folds, one through signature, ding to lower right corner and a block of toning over most of text. R&R COA.
