Description

The cardinal who owned Copy No. 1 of Gutenberg’s Bible

French cleric and statesman (1601–1662) who, through the influence of Cardinal Richelieu, became Prime Minister of France. He later became minister to the Queen Regent, Anne of Austria, and may have secretly married her. He is best known among antiquarians as the owner of the original copy Gutenberg’s epochal Bible, credited as the first book printed in movable type, which he bequeathed to the library now known as the Bibliothèque Mazarine. LS, in French, signed “Le Cardl. Mazarin,” one page, 7 x 9, October 25, 1654. Mazarin writes to the Archbishop of Mainz. In full (translated): “Your Electoral Highness does me justice in believing that I have for him all the sentiments of respect which he properly deserves. Your Highness has acknowledged that I have tried to give proof of this esteem on all occasions which have arisen. Your Highness should know that in the future I shall persevere in the same fashion. And with regard to this, beyond my own inclination, I follow that of the King who has always shown a particular love for your Electoral Highness. You can judge from the above that your nephew can expect from me all possible help and cooperation which I will be able to render. Your Electoral Highness will honor me by being assured and convinced that I am very truly humble.” Accompanied by an early lithographic portrait. A few spots of light foxing (mainly in blank portion) and a touch of mild soiling, otherwise fine condition, with clear, darkly penned text. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
