Eminent French artist (1869–1954), most closely associated with the Fauvist movement, best known for his colorful paintings, fluid drawings, and bold, distinctive cut-paper collages. ALS in French, one page, 8.25 x 10.5, January 14, 1938. Matisse writes to an unknown woman requesting the receipt for a large piece of furniture, a thirty-drawer “grand meuble” (most likely a cabinet for the storage of artworks) he had purchased from her during the previous summer, which he needs urgently. In fine condition, with folds, a touch of mild soiling, and a few thin spots and tiny separations to blank portion. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
