Weeks after running a distant third in the GOP presidential nomination, Reagan reflects on the 1968 Republican Convention: “I’ve just never been so d—n proud of Calif.”

ALS signed “Dutch,” one page, 5.5 x 8.5, humorous memo stationery letterhead, August 22, 1968. Reagan writes to “Smitty,” humorist H. Allen Smith. In part: “Well, it’s all over, and we brought our team home intact and that means we achieved our top goal. I can never thank you enough for all that you did in Miami, particularly when steadying words were needed. I’ve just never been so d—n proud of Calif. as I am right now.” The Republican National Convention was held in Miami Beach from August 5–8; Reagan came third in the balloting, with 182 votes to Nixon’s 692 and Nelson Rockefeller’s 277.
