Description

Fascinating 1959 Laurel letter on the “Cuban situation” and the “mass killing,” the sudden death of C. B. DeMille, and the murder of Carl “Alfalfa” Switzer: “All over a few Dollars debt he had to lose his life”

Exceptional TLS signed “Stan,” one page, 8 x 10, personal letterhead, January 29, 1959. Laurel writes to Jimmy Wiseman on a wide range of topics. In part [Stan’s typing retained]: “Interesting to know you attended the opening of the 86th. Congress & met Senator Engle, I too hope he will do a good job…. It was quite a shock to hear the sad news of C. B. DeMille, so unexpected—a great loss to the profession. That was a terrible thing about ‘Alfalfa’ Switzer was’nt it? All over a few Dollars debt he had to lose his life. I knew knew [sic] him very well as a kid in ‘Our Gang’ films, used to see him every day on the Roach lot for several years, its hard to believe that this could happen to him. What a tragedy. That Cuban situation does’nt look too good with all that mass killing going on, it certainly puts the new regime in a bad light, it gives the impression they are a bunch of hoodlums & not to be trusted. Have heard nothing further about the L&H book, will let you know when I do.” In fine, fresh condition, with usual mailing folds (one through signature). PSA/DNA COA and R&R COA. Featured collection item.
