Description

Art or ardor? “I am sorry I was not able ... to meet your wife and see her paintings”

Highly regarded and influential Mexican artist (1886–1957) who earned international acclaim—and stirred up much controversy—for his powerful, politically charged murals. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, December 29, 1940. Rivera writes from San Francisco to Quinby Self. In full: “I am sorry to have been so late in answering your letter, but I have been rather undecided as to my plans. I am sorry I was not able to be in Mexico during the hollidays [sic] so that I might have been able to meet your wife and see her paintings, but I am just now able to start toward the south.” In good condition, with toning, large paper loss along one fold (not affecting any text) and a few small holes (one near signature), the signature nonetheless strong and clear. R&R COA. Featured collection item.
