Description

The widow Garfield’s heartfelt lament: “The strength of my hope only made the wrench and the shock the fiercer when death snatched all away and robbed me of the chance to say to my beloved so many things now left unsaid”

ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.25 x 6.25, black-bordered personal letterhead, January 30, 1882. A little over three months after the death of her husband, President James Garfield, his widow sends a touching letter. In part, “Your lines…recall so sadly the hours when we hoped and prayed and believed the dear General’s life would be spared. So sadly, I say for the strength of my hope only made the wrench and the shock the fiercer when death snatched all away and robbed me of the chance to say to my beloved so many things now left unsaid, and to have gathered from his life words which to me now would be so precious.” In fine condition, with mild shade of toning to first page and expected folds. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
