LS signed “J. A. Garfield,” one page, 5 x 8, personal letterhead, January 14, 1881. Garfield sends regrets to Mr. T. P. Handy in Cleveland. In full: “Your favor of the 18th inst., came duly to hand. It would afford me pleasure to accept your kind invitation for the 20th, but engagements already made for that day will render it impossible. Regretting this but thanking you none the less for your courtesy.” In good condition, with soiling, staining, a few small holes, complete separations tape-repaired on the reverse (not affecting signature), and slight brush to last name. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
