British engineer (1803–1859) who assisted his father, the engineer George Stephenson, with a number of railway-related enterprises. He later served as Chief Engineer of London’s first railway, in that capacity constructing a number of bridges and tunnels, and served in Parliament. ALS signed “Robt. Stephenson,” one page both sides, 4.5 x 7, April 7, 1859. Stephenson writes to John Chapman in Whitby. In full: “I beg to enclose for your consideration my address to the electors [not present] which if you approve or with such alterations as you may think proper to make, you will perhaps be good enough to place in the hands of Messrs. Walker & Hunter with instructions to do the needful.” In fine condition, with usual mailing folds and a hint of mild soiling. R&R COA.
