Description

Mrs. James III

Polish-born princess (1702–1735) betrothed to Prince James Stuart. King George I of England was opposed to the marriage out of fear that Maria would produce an heir. In order to placate him, the Austrian Emperor, Charles VI, arrested Maria while on her way to Italy to marry James Stuart. She was confined in Innsbruck Castle but eventually escaped to Bologna, Italy, where she was married by proxy to James, who was then in Spain. DS, in French, signed “Clementine R,” one page, 8 x 10.75, October 15, 1729. A document certifying the arrangements for the payment of monies granted to her by her father, the prince Jacques Louis. The red wax seal remains intact at lower left. In very good condition, with light edge wear (a few small chips and tears), mild scattered soiling and wrinkling, a few pinholes, and mounting remnant along one edge of reverse, well away from text, none of the above affecting the bold signature. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
