Original 1948 yearbook, the “Black and Gold” from Fairmount High School, Fairmount, Indiana, softcover, 8 x 11, signed in ballpoint on an “Autographs” page, “Jim Dean, ‘Rack.’” Dean appears in several photos, including individual photos as an underclassman and as a member of the basketball team (“made a fine showing on the second team last year and as guard this year on the first”). Most telling, however, is his appearance (in glasses!) in a group photo showing the members of the Junior Class Play, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay, in which Dean played the role of Otis Skinner. Dean earned the nickname “Rack” for helping his uncle rack up the balls at the local pool hall. In fine condition, with soiling, edge wear, and partial separation of covers from text block, which itself is clean and crisp. Dean’s signature is dark and clear; one letter very slightly touches another student’s name written in pencil. COA PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
