Description

At the end of his law enforcement career, Garrett sets New Mexico’s governor straight on a job vacancy

New Mexico lawman who killed his former gambling partner, the legendary outlaw “Billy the Kid.” in 1881. Garrett himself was ambushed near Las Cruces and his suspected murderer, Jim “Deacon” Miller, was never brought to just for the crime. TLS, signed “Pat. F. Garrett,” one page, 8 x 10.5, Customs Service, Office of the Collector, El Paso, Tex. letterhead, April 24, 1905. A letter to Governor M. A. Otero, Santa Fe, New Mexico. “In reply to yours of the 20th instant I have to state that it is a mistake about there being a vacancy in the Deputy Collector and Clerk’s office at Columbus, New Mexico, as the position is being filled by Hon. W. R. Fall and has been filled by him for some time. However, if anything should occur whereby I may be able to place Mr. Fassett, I will take pleasure in doing so especially on your account.” The appointment of Garrett was a controversial one by Theodore Roosevelt and in December of the same year he refused to reappoint Garrett to this same post, whereupon Garrett and his family returned to their ranch in the San Andreas Mountains. In fine condition, with intersecting mailing folds, a vertical fold through one letter of the signature, office stamp to right edge and a few unobtrusive pencil notations. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
