Political leader and soldier in the American Revolution. In 1775 he was elected to the Continental Congress, where he signed the Declaration of Independence. In 1778 he returned to South Carolina to serve as a Judge. He was taken prisoner by the British while in command of a Militia force during the siege of Charleston. He resumed his Judgeship following the war, and retired in 1798. DS, signed “Tho. Heyward, Jr,” one page, 13 x 8.25, South Carolina letterhead, March 21, 1786. Legal document commanding sheriffs of the state to present Thomas Servey to appear in court before “Charles Wareham in a plea of Trespass on the case. Also for certain promises by the said Thomas unto the said Charles,” for total damages of eighty pounds. Signed in black ink under the paper seal on the left side. In good condition, with expected folds, several separations along folds, one affecting beginning portion of signature, scattered moderate toning and soiling, light edge wear and wrinkling.
