Louis was made king of Holland by his brother, Napoleon, on June 5, 1806. Though it was assumed he would function as little more than a French governor, Louis took his duties seriously, calling himself Lodewijk I (adopting the Dutch form of his name), learning the Dutch language, and making a concerted effort to be a responsible, independent ruler. LS in French, signed “C. de St. Leu,” one page, 8 x 10, November 14, 1839. An untranslated letter sending 600 francs to Col. Louis Letellier via Emanuel Caccia & Co. In fine condition, with usual folds, a few pencil notations, a touch of edge wear, and piece of adhesive tape to reverse lightly showing through (away from signature). R&R COA.
