Description

Wonderful McDaniel portrait

Best remembered for the role of Mammy in Gone with the Wind (1939), opposite Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress on February 29, 1940, making her the first African American performer to win an Oscar. Also notably, she was the first African American to attend the Oscars as a guest. From 1950-1953 she starred in Beulah, as Beulah, a comedy series about a family whose Negro domestic resolves the inherent “situation” with more common sense than the rest of the family combined. Vintage sepia matte-finish 8 x 10 photo of McDaniel in a polka dotted dress and wearing a large pendant, signed “Best Wishes from Hattie McDaniel ‘44” in fountain pen. In fine condition, with adhesive residue on the reverse. COA PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
