Description

Truman appoints, and later accepts the resignation of the Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission

DS as president, one page, 20 x 17, July 5, 1946. President Truman appoints Edward M. Hanrahan of New York “a Member of the Securities and Exchange Commission for the remainder of the term expiring June 5, 1947.” Signed at the conclusion in black ink and countersigned by his Acting Secretary of State. Document is accompanied by a TLS, signed by Truman as president, dated October 12, 1949 on White House letterhead. Letter reads, in part, “I am familiar with the consideration which prompt your desire to return to private business…I feel that I have no recourse but to accept, effective at the close of business on November third next, the resignation which you submitted today as a member and Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission. Your years with the Commission have indeed been fruitful in constructive results…You have reason to be especially proud of the finding of the Commission on Organization of the Executive Branch of the Government, which, after a survey, reported that the Securities and Exchange Commission was an example of the independent commission at its best.” Hanrahan served as chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission between 1948 and 1949 and also served as a member from 1946-1949. Both are double matted and framed with a color portrait of Truman, to an overall size of 37.5 x 28. In fine condition, with some mild toning to document and letter and an intact paper seal. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA. Oversized.
