Description

Engine talk with John Ericsson

Army engineer who designed and built the ironclad warship Monitor for the American navy. Lot of three TLSs, each signed “J. Ericsson,” each 5 x 8, all dated October and November 1859 in Ericsson’s somewhat difficult to decipher hand. An excerpt from the November 10, 1859 letter reads: “I shall advise Captn. Roberts to day to exchange his air hoister for one actuated directly by the engine. You will by the change, have a complete Store hoister, tank charging pump and all and at the same time find a proper place for the intended caloric hoister…I should wish to Roberts discharging his ship by caloric, which can be effected with proper diligence on our part - I will come round and give directions as soon as you send word that the machine is in your place.” Accompanied by a typed transcript for each letter. In fine condition, with a bit of adhesive residue from a previous mounting to the reverse of each from previous mountings, minor edge toning, a blue or red office check mark to each. In fine condition. R&R COA.
