As General Washington winters in Morristown, Ellsworth signs a pay voucher in Hartford

Second Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, delegate to the Constitutional Congress (1777–84), later submitted the amendments which became the Bill of Rights. As a member of the Committee of the Pay Table, Oliver Ellsworth was one of the five men who supervised Connecticut's war expenditures. DS, signed “O. Ellsworth,” one page, 8 x 4, February 17, 1777, Hartford. Written by Thomas Seymour, a pay order to treasurer John Lawrence to pay Eben. Spencer. In part: “Pay to Spencer the sum of two hundred fifteen pounds nineteen shillings for purchase of 870…of saltpeter…” In very good condition, with expected age and handling wear, a couple areas of trivial soiling, rough right edge.
