Actor tragically stabbed to death at the age of 37. Starred in such classics as Rebel Without A Cause, Giant, and Exodus. Nominated for two Academy Awards and had won an Emmy and a Golden Globe before he was 21. Archive of eight pieces includes ALSs, his final examination report from the School For Young Professionals (June 1955), a postcard and his Tutor’s Report, also June 1955. Excerpts from a letter to his acting teacher in New York, Mr. Quintano, dated March 9, 1955 include: “I am sending you the work I have been doing. I hope it’s suficient [sic]. I’ve finished ‘The Private War of Major Benson.’ I may also do a picture for Warner Bros. I hope it works out for me.” Another letter to his acting teacher, dated March 28, 1955: “I thought I’d tell you that I will be out here another six or seven weeks with a new picture called ‘Rebel Without a Cause’ and I’m so excited about it because it’s the third starring role for me. I’m very anxious to get back with the old gang and school.” A letter to Mr. Quintano dated May 31, 1955, reads, in part: “Sorry I hadn’t written to you sooner. I had expected to be home by the first of June. I would like very much to take my exams when I get back. I have been signed to do a role in ‘Giant’ for Warner Bros. My luck has been with me all the way. I just hope it stays with me.” In a postcard to his school in New York, he writes, “Just a few words to say I’m fine but I miss the kids and of course school? The movie is real fine and I’m happy about it.” Giant was released in October of 1955, and this may well have been the film he refers to here. His final exam report has the typewritten “Good luck to you, have a well-earned vacation” under which Mineo has written in caps, “You can say that again!” Also included, his report card for the period when he was filming Rebel Without a Cause. The director is listed as “Ray,” who was the director. Mineo was 16 at the time. This piece is unsigned, and he earned three Bs and a C. Also included, an envelope written entirely in Mineo’s hand to his teacher in New York, with the return address portion filled out and signed by Mineo. Terrific archive providing a great deal of insight into a very talented, popular and tragic young star. PSA/DNA COA and R&R COA.
