Description

The navigator of the Enola Gay recounts the reaction of the Hiroshima survivors: “The flash of the explosions was tremendous but there was not much noise”

Signed book: It Happened in 1945, edited by Clark Kinnard. NY: Duell, Sloan and Pearce, 1946. Hardcover, 6.25 x 9.25, 464 pages. Signed later in ballpoint on the half-title page, “Dutch Van Kirk, Navigator—Enola Gay, Aug. 6, 1945.” Van Kirk also adds a lengthy inscription. In full: “Generally historically accurate book. Note that page 127 states the atomic bomb was dropped on August 5 which is correct for local USA time zones. However in Taiwan time it was actually 9:15 AM August 6. In Hiroshima it was 8:15 AM local time Aug 6. P. 143. Survivors said the flash of the explosions was tremendous but there was not much noise and no earth quaking.” In very good condition, with light rubbing, tears and fraying to spine, toning to interior, and partial separation to front hinge. R&R COA.
