Description

Tibbets recounts the final planning stages of the bomb drop: “The isolated location of Wendover, which would bring cries of horror from my men and the label ‘Leftover Field’ from Bob Hope when he visited, was precisely the feature that made it attractive to me.”

Souvenir typescript, The Air Base at the End of Nowhere, 8.5 x 11, six pages, signed “Paul W. Tibbets” in blue ink at the bottom right of the first page. An account regarding the Wendover Army Air Corps base where the mission to drop Little Boy and Fat Man was fine-tuned. In part: “The isolated location of Wendover, which would bring cries of horror from my men and the label ‘Leftover Field’ from Bob Hope when he visited, was precisely the feature that made it attractive to me…The trouble with trying to impress a soldier with the need for security is that he has been hearing that ever since entering the service…There were also restricted areas where only certain technical personnel were allowed to enter. There was barbed wire everywhere.” In fine condition. R&R COA.
