Description

Col. Samuel Altee who fought in the Battle of Long Island writes an ALS attempting to settle debt

Col. Altee assisted Stirling in the Battle of Long Island, the largest of the American Revolution and the first fought after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. ALS signed “Sam. J. Atlee,” one page both sides, 7.5 x 9, April 8, 1785. Letter to Jasper Yeats, attempting to settle a debt. In full, “I am favored with yours of the 4th acknowledging the receipt of £60 part of my sons fee - the remainder I hope to send you - I cannot blame Mr. Hubly's impatience with respect to Mr. Coale's Debt, who has repeatedly promised (knowing I gave my Obligation to Mr. Hubly, to gain him time, and relieve him from present difficulty) to discharge the debt, or regularly pay the Interest - I am much obliged to you for the Notice, it will cause me a Journey to Maryland, whether successfully or not I cannot say, -- at all events I must undertake it. I have sent to Mr. Davis the surviving Executor and make no doubt the amiable suit you are kind enough to mention will be agreed to him - Betty Richardson has promised me that the Interest due in May shall be paid - and I hope he will be able to collect his outstanding Debt in Carolina and elsewhere so as to discharge the principle before the next years Interest shall become due.” Yeates served as a delegate from Lancaster County to the Constitutional Convention in 1787 and received a commission as justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in 1791. In fine condition, with a mild shade of overall toning and several pencil notations to left side. R&R COA.
