Description

Franc-ly, my dear, I don’t give a damn: Just months after Napoleon gave her le boot, Josephine raises funds by selling some clothing

Wife of Napoleon and Empress of France. Scarce DS in French, signed “Josephine,” one page, 7.25 x 2, November 21, 1810. In full (translated): “I have received from M. Perlot, my Chief Steward, the sum of 2,000 francs in 100 gold Napoleons, the proceeds from the sale of shawls which I remitted to him. Malmaison, 21 Nov. 1810.” In January of that year, Napoleon, anxious for a male heir, divorced Josephine. In March he married (by proxy) Marie Louise of Austria, who bore him his only son, Napoleon Francis Joseph Charles (aka Napoleon II). In fine condition, with tear archivally repaired on the reverse, light toning (somewhat more prominent at the edges), and some light scattered foxing, no faults affecting the clean, clear signature. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
