Jefferson nips a rank dispute in the bud, salving the bruised ego of a complaining officer who feels he’s been sleighted

Handwritten endorsement, signed “Th: Jefferson, dated August 12, 1780, written on the reverse of an ALS written by Hugh McGarrock from the Albany barracks, regarding several other officers contending with him for rank, “that new officers…appointed that never had a commission before should take command of all others of the same rank.” On the reverse, Jefferson writes, “In Council, Aug. 12, 1780. Referred to Col. Wood to have settled by a board of officers.” Letter has been professionally inlaid to a slightly larger sheet. Horizontal and vertical mailing folds, some scattered light toning, small repaired area of paper loss from seal and all writing and signature clear and bold, otherwise very good condition.
