In the midst of war, harried LBJ reassures Texas’s first female mayor: “Your nephew, Wood, is certainly doing his part in the most dangerous sector of the war, and I know that your anxiety for him must be mixed with pride”

TLS signed “Lyndon,” one page, 6 x 8.5, Congress of the United States letterhead, March 19, 1943. Letter to Mary K. Hartson, the first female mayor in Texas. In part, “Your nephew, Wood, is certainly doing his part in the most dangerous sector of the war, and I know that your anxiety for him must be mixed with pride.” Johnson adds a handwritten postscript to the bottom of the page, “Do drop me a note when you get a moment. I do miss seeing my loved ones at home but we have plenty of difficulties to keep us busy here. L. B. J.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. In fine condition, with a bisecting horizontal mailing fold. R&R COA.
