Archive consisting of fifteen letters on various types of stationery or note cards. Each letter is signed “Bette Davis” or just “Bette” and appear to be written in the late 1970s to early 1980s. Excerpts from the lot include: “Well, Lady bugs bring me luck! The Dodgers didn’t!” From another letter: “Thank you so much for my party…Earl - you have a twin - your son. Spooky - just as much enthusiasm and get up and go as you. How can you stand two of them, Lucy?” From another letter: “How very nice of you to send me flowers! I am so furious at this stupid accident!!!” A letter dated January 9 reads, in part, “…right now I prefer pictures to the dear old spoken drama - it’s all so complicated out here…of course my hair is driving me crazy - may cut it off - do hope I can stay six months at least…” Another letter reads, in part: “Am at last on the payroll again…and believe me this lay off has been bad - money’s awful tight - so I owe you for two past weeks, will send it along as soon as I can - it may be not for a couple of weeks, send it all together.” Another reads, in part “You and your family have been so good and appreciative of me and my career. I have been very rude to you on the phone. For this, I apologize. But questions about my career or my life have always driven me mad! As to anything to do with the San Diego press - this is, quite frankly none of your business!! I would thank you for stopping, feeling you are giving me publicity in your town - I don’t need it…Lucy will understand this letter more than you will.” In overall fine condition, with typical letter folds, edge toning to a few, and small areas of discoloration.
