Description

Ian Fleming good-humoredly disapproves of a James Bond likeness: “I have no great objections to him as depicted, though he looks a bit stunted and I don’t care for the shape of his collar, which I think must have been bought at Brookes’ Brothers”

Creator of James Bond. TLS, one page, 8 x 10, 4 Olde Mitre Court letterhead, May 8, 1962. Letter to Jay Tower. In full, “Thank you very much for your letter of April 25th, and it’s nice of you to ask for my comments on the James Bond likeness. I have no great objections to him as depicted, though he looks a bit stunted and I don’t care for the shape of his collar, which I think must have been bought at Brookes’ Brothers. But the NAL styling of my books and your wonderful promotion of them is so good that I really have no criticism. By the way, the last time I saw you and Victor he was kind enough to say that he would complete my collection of your artwork by sending me the original of the picture of Diamonds Are Forever. Would you be an angel and jog his memory about this as I have a blank space left on the wall of my office, the rest being occupied by NAL art work in the smartest possible gold frames. Many thanks for the New Yorker piece, which I had in fact seen. It is quite fun but full of ridiculous mistakes like mixing up The Times with the Sunday Times. Very unlike the New Yorker. Life has just finished photographing a majestic profile of me in most of the sixty-nine positions, but heaven knows if or when it will see the light of day. They certainly did the hell of a professional job and sound enthusiastic.” In fine condition, with a light shade of toning from previous display, traces of erased notations to top corners, a horizontal mailing fold and a staple hole to top left. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
