During the French and Indian War, he was captured at Fort Oswego, where he was the clothing contractor for British troops, but he was later exchanged. In the American Revolution, Lewis would become a Signer of the Declaration of Independence from New York, and would also provide important service on the Commerce and Marine Committees in the Continental Congress. The British would imprison his wife and destroy his Long Island home. Handwritten endorsement on a 5.75 x 3.5 slip, clipped from a larger document, dated February 15, 1769.
