Autograph album of General Joseph C. Abbott of New Hampshire. In 1856, Abbott was appointed adjutant-general of New Hampshire, an office he held until his resignation in 1861.  In September of 1861, General Abbott received authority from the War Department to raise a regiment of infantry from the State of New Hampshire.  He formed the Seventh Regiment and established its headquarters in Manchester. Leather bound album measures 9 x 10.5 and contains approximately 305 signatures of political and military figures of the time. Album is highlighted by signatures of President U. S. Grant, his Vice President Schuyler Colfax, and eight members of his cabinet including Hamilton Fish, Secretary of War Belknap and Gideon Welles, on a tipped in signature. Other notables include Senator J. A. Garfield, Supreme Court Justices Clifford, Swayne, Miller, Strong, David Davis, Joseph Bradley and Stephen Field. Other notables include General N. P. Banks, John Sherman, Roscoe Conklin, Charles Sumner, Henry Wilson, Carl Schurz and Henry Slocum. In fine condition, with some possible fire damage to tipsof pages, not affecting signature, very loose back cover and some light toning. RRAuction COA.
