Important LS signed 'J. A. Garfield,' one page, 5 x 8, Mentor, Ohio letterhead, October 27, 1880. Letter, written in the hand of Garfield's campaign secretary J. Stanley Brown, to the Hon. Simeon B. Chittenden, Republican New York Congressman who published the Brooklyn daily newspaper. In full, 'I am glad that you have so thoughtfully stepped forward to help crush the villainous attempt to carry the campaign by forgery. Accept my thanks. Remember me kindly to Mrs. Chittenden.' On October 20th, a New York weekly, The Truth, published a letter, purportedly written by Garfield to H. L.
