Description

First chief justice of the Supreme Court. In 1795 he negotiated 'Jay's Treaty' with England, in which America agreed to pay its pre-war debts in return for Britain leaving the Northwest. LS, one page, 7.5 x 8.5, August 1, 1791. Short letter to Henry Remsen. In full, 'Be so obliging as to take the measures necessary to the payment of the enclosed aut. I expect to return on Friday next.' In very good condition, with a light shade of toning, heavier along a vertical fold and bottom edge, small pencil notation and mounting remnant to left edge.
