Description

French cardinal and chancellor (1506-1583) who was implicated in the 1572 St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre. Vellum manuscript DS, in French, signed “R. C. de Birague,” one page, 10.25 x 5.5, July 1578. Official document signed by Rene Cardinal de Birague as Chancellor of France. The white paper seal affixed to the lower right remains intact. In fine condition, with loss to the lower left corner and an old affixed catalog caption.
