British dramatist and lyricist (1836-1911) best known for his 14 comic operas written in collaboration with composer Arthur Sullivan. ALS in French, signed “W. S. Gilbert,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7.25, personal letterhead, December 9, 1871. Handwritten letter concerning American performances of his blank verse play The Wicked World, in part: "I think you misunderstand the terms of our agreement. You can scarcely suppose that when I agreed to take 20 per cent of your profits, as my fee for the performance of the 'Wicked World' I meant that you were simply to act as my agent in America, & that your fee as agent was to be 80 per cent!…My fee for the performance of the Wicked World is £5-5- per representation. This amount, for the number of times played, I shall expect to receive by this day four weeks—that is to say, by the 6th Jan'y 1874." In fine condition.
