Description

Striking carte-de-visite portrait

Magnificent 2.25 x 3.75 carte-de-visite portrait of the composer in profile, signed vertically on the right side in bold black ink, “Richard Wagner.” This image was captured during an 1877 sitting with Elliott & Fry in London. Affixed to an attractive gold brocade background and presented in an Art Nouveau frame to an overall size of 5.25 x 8. In fine condition. During this period of his life, Wagner was beginning to seriously work on his last completed opera, Parsifal, which he had conceived two decades earlier while contemplating the 13th-century epic poem that tells the story of the Arthurian knight Percival and his quest for the Holy Grail. The opera would premiere at the Bayreuth Festival five years later in 1882, one year before his death. A superlative example of one of the most sought-after musical autographs. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
