Description

Hitler's half-sister Angela Hammitzsch writes in 1940 of personally appealing to Nazi Interior Minister Wilhelm Frick

Elder half-sister (1883–1949) of Adolf Hitler and the mother of Geli Raubal, who died mysteriously in Hitler's apartment in 1931. ALS in German, signed “Angela Hammitzsch,” one page on a 3.5 x 5.5 photo postcard, January 8, 1940. Handwritten letter to Professor Hans Pant in Lilienfeld, in full (translated): "I have sent the matter direct to Dr. Frick, the Reich Minister, and I hope that, a communication has arrived from there." In fine condition.

Angela Hammitzsch had once occupied a privileged position in Adolf Hitler's inner circle, managing his household at the Berghof near Berchtesgaden, where her daughter Geli Raubal also lived until her death in 1931. Angela's relationship with her half-brother deteriorated in the mid-1930s, and she left his household before marrying Dresden architect Martin Hammitzsch in 1936.

Written just four months after the outbreak of World War II, this postcard offers an intriguing glimpse into Angela's personal correspondence and apparent access to the highest levels of the Nazi government. Her reference to forwarding a matter directly to Wilhelm Frick, Hitler's Reich Minister of the Interior and one of the regime's most powerful officials, suggests that she was in a position to appeal to senior Nazi leadership on behalf of an acquaintance.

Johann 'Hans' Pant, a Catholic priest, had known Adolf Hitler for years and maintained connections with Hitler's family. Pant officiated at the September 23, 1931, funeral of Hitler's niece, Geli Raubal, whose mysterious death in Hitler's Munich apartment had been officially ruled a suicide. Pant subsequently questioned that explanation, declaring in a 1939 newspaper statement that he would never have permitted a suicide to receive a Catholic burial.
