Description

The man who sent 100,000 Dutch Jews to their deaths fights the Nuremberg bureaucracy for a lawyer

Two ALSs by Arthur Seyss-Inquart, both written while imprisoned at Nuremberg:

- ALS in pencil, in German, signed “Seyss-Inquart,” one page, 8 x 10.5, October 21, 1945. Handwritten letter sent to the attention of Airey Neave at Nuremberg, in full (translated): "I have prepared a report of my activities in the Netherlands (20 pages). The Interrogating Officer gave me to believe that I would be able to dictate this work to a typist and simultaneously to have it translated into English. I request that this be made possible."

- ALS in pencil, in German, signed “Seyss-Inquart,” one page, 8 x 11.25, October 27, 1945. Handwritten letter to Airey Neave, in full (translated): "As regards the indictment, in as far as I thought it relative to me, I have explained my position in a statement, and I request to produce this. I request to be informed about the position regarding my defense. I request a decision regarding reproduction in typewriting of my memorandum on the Netherlands."

Both backed by lightweight cardstock and in fine condition, with professional cleaning to the paper.

As Reich Commissar for the Occupied Netherlands, Seyss-Inquart administered a regime of deportation and terror that sent more than 100,000 Dutch Jews to their deaths and enforced brutal reprisals against the Dutch resistance and civilian population. These letters show him working the Tribunal's administrative channels, chasing typists, translators, and word on his own defense counsel, in the earliest stage of building a case against charges that would end in his execution. He was convicted on all four counts and hanged October 16, 1946.
